Pomegranate Bonsai - A Great Choice For An Indoor House Plant PDF Print E-mail

The Pomegranate Bonsai is also known as the Punica Granatum, and is a deciduous variety of small bonsai trees or shrubs.   They have glossy, bright green oblong shaped leaves that that grow on reddish stems.  The Pomegranate Bonsai is a tender loving variety that is quite hardy and requires a high temperate climate for the plants to produce the edible round yellowish-red fruit famous for pomegranate trees,  This variety produces foliage that is quite attractive.

There is a variety of Pomegranate, called Punica Granatum var nana

that is a much smaller variety and most

often is grown as a house plant. This smaller variety of bonsai will produce very pretty  red tubular flowers and extremely bright orange fruits.

The Pomegranate Bonsai is an especially good indoor variety as it thrives in warmer environments.  Early spring is the best time to repot young plants and repotting should be done every two years.  The best time to prune your Pomegranate is during the summer months.  Pruning is accomplished by pinching back the young reddish colored shoots.  The pruning process will cause the bonsai plant to become much more bushy and help the plant to remain smaller.

Caring for the Pomegranate Bonsai is fairly simple.  Regular watering of this variety of bonsai is mandatory especially during the hot summer months when the plant is growing and the temperature is the hottest.  The plant should be watered in the morning.  Do not over water.  The amount of water for any one time should should leave no indication of water by the evening including any excess water that may have been in the pot.  When the pot has no signs of water twelve hours after watering, you have used the correct amount of water.

If the compost ever becomes very dry - ie too dry - put the Pomegranate Bonsai in its pot into a larger bowl so that approximately one third of the bonsai pot is immersed in water.  Remove the bonsai tree pot from the larger bowl when the moisture has seeped to the top of the bonsai plants potting soil.

Feeding of the Pomegranate Bonsai should occur every two weeks from mid spring to early fall. Use a weak liquid fertilizer and apply at one of the waterings.  During the rest of the tear, the plant only needs a feeding every four to six weeks,  If the plant goes dormant, never apply fertilizer while the plant is dormant.

The Pomegranate Bonsai can be successfully grown from seeds.  Summer cuttings of softwood shoots can also be used produce a new tree,  This variety of bonsai grows well from either seeds or cuttings.  It is a great plant for the home hobbyist gardener.
