Baby Jade on Rock Slab Bonsai Tree
(Portlacaria Afra)

This succulent bonsai, also known as the "Elephant Bush", is native to South Africa and has pale green leaves that are almost round and about one-third the size of the common Jade plant. The fleshy trunk, branches, and leaves are used to store water. An excellent beginner bonsai for home or office.

All the way from South Africa, Jade bonsai's are different to Japanese bonsai's in that they require different treatment, watering, food, and maintenance. In this article, we will take a look at these requirements - so that you - as an avid bonsai gardener - can succeed in bring up this variety. The Jade Bonsai is an evergreen tree, meaning that the leaves stay on all year round - unlike some bonsai's which lose their leaves in winter. This make the Jade bonsai an excellent feature of any room - throughout the entire year. Basically, the Jade bonsai has a stark resemblance to that of a cactus - except with a stem and branches instead of a pokey spine. The caring and maintenance requirements of the tree are also similar to that of growing a cactus - as we will now go on to find out. Lighting / Watering. Whilst it is important that Jade Bonsai's are grown inside, it is equally important to place them in a spot with very good sunlight. Just as a cactus needs a limited amount of watering, the Jade bonsai has leaves which will capture additional water when you sprinkle fluid over it, meaning that you do not need to water it very often. In fact, if you water too regularly, the bonsai runs the risk of developing something known as "root rot" - which can harm the bonsai in the long run. Additionally, the availability of too much surface water will lead to a shallow root structure - resulting in a nimble and weak bonsai. Bonsai Fertilizers . Unlike other variations which do not need Fertilizers - the Jade Bonsai most certainly does. If you are unable to locate a consistently bright spot inside where your bonsai can benefit from maximum light - an organic Fertilizers is an absolute necessity. This will replace the nutrients that the plant misses out on as a result of it's specific need for growing conditions not being met - and hence will result in successful growth. Repotting / Pruning. Repotting Jade Bonsai's should be undertaken about every 2 to 3 years, as the plants grow in size. As they age, the growth rate generally slows, and hence the repotting period will expand to more than 3 years per repot. This all relies on adequate pruning and wiring however. Jade bonsai's can be refigured into any position with the use of wiring. 2 - 3 months with directional assistance, and the bonsai should hold its shape. Pruning of the new growths when they occur will also keep the burden off the root configuration, and hence allow for successful long-term growing.
