SAGO PALM BONSAI >The Sago Palm Bonsai - whilst it does thoroughly resemble a palm tree - is actually not one at all. This variety of bonsai belongs to the cycad species of trees - all of which are native to Japan's southern areas. The perfect trunk on the street allows it to be steady and sturdy, yet easy to manipulate for creating interesting bonsai design.  As the trunk is thick, peculiar, lopsided shapes are still able to be achieved with the use of wire, making this a particularly versatile bonsai tree. > > > > Despite its versatility however, the Sago Palm bonsai does require a lot of attention - meaning that it is a good tree for bonsai enthusiasts, but not such a good tree for a first time beginner. If you are an intermediate bonsai grower, be sure to read all about the Sago Palm bonsai before you start growing it - so that you know what to be aware of and what to focus on. > > > > Let's begin with watering. Obviously, the more sunlight your Sago Palm bonsai receives, the more you'll need to water it. This variety of bonsai requires constantly moist bonsai soil, meaning that if you leave the bonsai and direct sunlight, and forget to water it during the day - you may find that you stunt the growth of the tree, and hence have issues down the track with your Japanese bonsai. > > > > In the winter months, you may not need to water the bonsai every day, however to be sure to check the moisture levels in the soil on a regular basis - because even in cold weather, the bonsai soil can still dry out. > > > > It is also important to keep the leaves off the Sago Palm bonsai moist. Whilst some varieties of bonsai such as the Shimpaku Juniper, Hinoki Cypress, and the Weeping Pussy Willow do not need all that much attention paid to the leaves - the Sago Palm bonsai does. Ensure that you don't put this tree in a direct draft or breeze, as this will dry out the leaves further, and could cause them to deteriorate. > > > > Additionally, when it comes to bonsai fertilizer - you have no option but to use it with the Sago Palm bonsai tree. Because this variety of bonsai is highly demanding on the soil, you will need to replace the nutrients every few days in order to continue seeing successful growth with the bonsai tree. Click here for fertilizer > > > > Finally, spider mites and scale should be looked out for because they can potentially destroy the Sago Palm Bonsai. If you see any signs of disease or illness, ensure that you spray not only the Sago Palm, but also the rest of the trees annual bonsai garden, to be absolutely sure that you kill the pests or diseases which may be in or around your bonsai tree. The Sago Palm is a long-lived exotic palm that tolerates neglect but thrives with attention. Adapts to indirect light or full sun and has a wide temperature range from 15 to 120 degrees F. A slow growth rate allows indoor specimens to remain in the same container indefinitely. Treat as a cactus -- water when almost dry and seldom fertilize.
